Frequently Asked Questions

What type items does KSO make?   Primarily sheet metal parts (steel, aluminum, stainless steel) with formed features that may be simple bends or complex shapes requiring special tooling.  We can also build fabricated parts from stock material that require cutting, machining and welding, and can do wire- and small-tube forming.

What quantities do we generally work in?   Usually prototype- or low-volume, one part up to hundreds or in some cases more.  We are not equipped for high-volume production but can often refer a U.S. supplier.

Do we design?  We can offer assistance or advice if required but customers should have a clear idea of their needs and ideally fully-spec'd drawings or cad files.

Do we hold ISO etc. certifications?  No, we are a small shop who generally works with manufacturers (who typically are certified) with prototype and development assistance and do not maintain our own.

How are we equipped for Quality Control?  We use traditional surface-plate and gauging equipment and can produce inspection reports when required using those methods.

What processes and equipment are available?  For cutting sheet material into blanks and strips we have a 10 ga capacity gap-frame (side loading) shear.  Flat parts are cut in the shop with single-station punches in 5- and 30-ton (pantograph) capacities for which we have an extensive punch/die stock.  We can also saw cut or use plasma or machining.  Forming may be done with presses up to  45 tons and 6' capacity (again well tooled) or on a 100-tons and 4'.  We can weld in mig, tig, gas and using resistance spot welding.   We use a 24x12" (travel) manual Bridgeport mill and lathes up to 13" swing for special tooling or other projects as required.  We do quality weld-cleanup and other grinding and finishing with a large selection of small tools.

Outside vendors are used if/when laser, waterjet or turret-punch work is required.

How do we charge?  We can review customer drawings and specifications and submit a cost and timing quote, or in some cases work by-the-hour.  There may be an up-front materials charge if such costs are significant.   We work COD or on a 30-day net for qualified customers.
